Every day we meet with candidates who have not grasped the basic fundamentals of a simple resume.  This is very easy to do as many of us have difficulty writing about ourselves. There is no right or wrong way to write a resume, there are just some golden rules.

There are two considerations before you commence composing on any resume

 1) what is the purpose of you  resume ?

2) who  is the audience / reader?

OK,  let’s examine these two considerations first

1) What is the purpose of a resume?

In our opinion, a good resume is one that gets you to an interview… pure and simple! Therefore the purpose is to influence, persuade and attract the reader’s attention! It should make them want to interview you and spend time getting to know you better.  The resume must be inviting and contain the key elements that pertain to the listed, advertised job. This is the one chance to entice the employer to “buy” you, and not someone else, so your resume needs to be hitting the spot in regards to key criteria and relevant skills. Employers (the readers) can not perform “leaps of faith” and draw the right conclusions unless you make it quite clear that your skills, experience & qualifications match the job that they need filled!

2) Who is the audience /who will read this document?

Research shows that most employers take 6-8 seconds to read a resume.  WOW! that is not much time eh? Especially consider how long the average person spends writing a resume!  So you must pack the punch and hit the target for that job in that short time!

Here are a two most important  hints

1) Phone the employer before sending in an application. Have questions prepared in regards to the job. One of the best questions is “In this role, what does 80% of the day look like?”

2) Write the resume with the job advert in mind. What are they really looking for? Highlight the skills and experiences that you feel will translate easily to the role. Examine the information you have gathered on the role and the content of your resume and see if you can match them both to this job.  If you can’t then just maybe the reader will have difficulty seeing the alignment also. If the advert calls for “experience” in a certain field and you don’t have that experience, what can you write in a positive way that explains how you gained similar experience elsewhere? It’s called transferable skills… but you will have to help them “see” the easy transition,,Whatever you do, DO NOT write “I DON’T have the experience required!”

I believe your resume is the “Bait” that catches the attention of the reader (or not!). What results have you got from your resume? Have you sent heaps out with little result? Sending the same resume out for various jobs, is NOT helping you bait the right catch!

Research the companies you are keen on; (don’t be afraid to make a phone call and ask questions!) Examine the future of this industry – is it viable? if you got work ( or fished here) is it fertile enough to sustain you in the future; check that you have the right qualifications; skills and experience; Written job applications need to be tailored to the job advertisement.

The Right Time

So what can you do in this challenging new world? Here are SIX basic tips.

Keep abreast of new technology

Even if it means getting your children or grand children to teach you! Ask them questions, keep your currency with anything new in the IT space.  Get interested! if you don’t know, enrol in a basic course and learn. Almost all job roles require some form of IT knowledge – get with this century and get curious!

Think inside the square

What do you do when you don’t know what to do? Fight or flight? How do you fight on? What resources to you have available to you that you have not previously considered? Think about your networks; your connections either on-line or personal contacts. Who and where can you advertise your skills? If you choose to “flight” and run away from the problem, does this mean moving to another location where the jobs you seek are in more supply? Burying your head in the sand is not an option.

Perform a personal Skills Audit

What are your current assets? How do they match up with current demand within workplaces? Are your skills current? relevant? transferable? What can you do really well? What work do you enjoy the most? Are you being realistic? Conduct a Free Career survey – Google this – you may be surprised with the results. Visit a Career counsellor; talk with Employers about what they are looking for, and also how they recruit.

Sell yourself – make each application individual

Dont send a “sausage factory” style resume that looks exactly like others! Make yours personal.  Add a brief description of yourself, along with why you want this job! What makes you unique? Make sure you explain any gaps or career leaps in your resume – remember the reader can not read your mind! Tackle possible objections to you as a potential worker, just like a salesperson… address this up-front… for example, if you think that they may think you are over-qualified, make sure you nail this issue with a statement that says, ” I’m mature, fit and stable person with another 15 years of hard work on offer. Even though my experience has meant managerial work, I’m keen to remain useful and within the workforce, you will find me a low maintenance worker who will follow instructions and be able to produce great work… bla bla bla ….

Review and edit your resume for each job!

Dont make the usual error of applying for a job and your application states you are applying for entirely different job role and employer! Read and edit ruthlessly! Employers want to know that you care about their job and that you know something about them…

Here are a few tips to working your way through the disappointment of not being successful in obtaining that job! There are varying levels of unsuccessful… your application may have been culled at the written stage, or at the interview stage. Either way, it will have an impact on you. Sadly, all too often, many employers and agencies don’t even inform you of the outcome.

Applying for a job is an emotional, financial and an investment in time – all valuable! You will have quite a bit of “buy-in” and your care factor and anticipation rating is usually high.

Let’s assume you made it to interview and you really gave it your all! You walked away feeling confident, but sadly, you got “the” dreaded call that announced you have been unsuccessful.

What can you do to lessen the trauma? Here are some strategies that may help.

• Ask what you could have done to improve your application
• Don’t get angsty, negative or nasty with the messenger, remain polite and courteous
• NEVER call to “have a go” ask yourself first “what is the point?” “ What will be achieved by upsetting them?”
• Remember that all interviewers perceive candidates differently and often they make final decisions (rightly or wrongly) based on gut feel.
• Sometimes feedback is minimal if not, completely absent, just soldier on and know that you were successful at obtaining an interview and that means that many were not.
• Research has shown that out of 100 applications, there will only be 4 or 5 that make it to interview – so you were chosen!
• Sometimes candidates more accustomed and experienced at being interviewed pipped you at the post, this does always mean that they are the better applicant. Practice and fine tune your interviewing skills!
• Treat yourself.. spoil yourself…eat a chocolate – whatever floats your boat
• call a friend – debrief and most of all – RELAX!

If you maintain a pleasant work environment, you won’t have to look too hard for new team members, as no one will want to leave! Developing a reputation as a great employer helps position you as an ideal workplace. Word of mouth works really well as your team talk to peers in other workplaces about what a great boss you are and what a great place to work!

Take on some public speaking engagements that present you as an expert and leader in your field. Start a blog and include comments about why your business has the best people and show you really are very proud of them.  Your reputation will spread and your current employees will appreciate you even more.

Often small business owners ask their staff to refer people (like themselves) to work for them. Sometimes this works, however you may find that “friends” and family may cause unnecessary conflicts in the workplace.  It is advised to recruit slowly and carefully, making sure you have a clear picture of the type of person you are looking for; as well as a good job description, prior to seeking any further staff.   Some employers may find recruitment difficult, whether it’s because they don’t have the time or maybe it’s because they are not confident with recruitment.  You may want to consider an objective perspective and hire a professional and experienced recruiter who knows just what to look for when sourcing the right staff for you. If you are a small to medium business, a good recruiter can attract and place candidates who might not normally consider your workplace.   For larger businesses, recruitment agencies can often be the most cost effective way to find the best fit.  As we all know, an unhappy,  team member can destroy the culture of any  business very quickly.  Just one bad apple…….

5. Manage their performance and reward good work

“Talk early, talk often and talk private”.  The most important aspect of any relationship is consistent and regular communication.  A clear written job description along with simple expectations of their on- the- job behaviour must be communicated to them. When you see your staff performing well, sincerely praise them! If and when they are not performing to standard,  a chat in private is necessary and make sure you refer them to the written expectations a help steer back on track.

In conclusion, one of the biggest challenges of any business is staffing.  If staff are the wrong fit, and do not enjoy their jobs, this attitude will be obvious to your customers! Your customers want to experience a happy, positive environment. It’s not just the great coffee and food that delights, it’s the people interactions, it’s the remembering of customer’s names and orders, it’s the genuine smile that really counts to making sure your customers return time and time again and making your business a success.

At some time we have all heard or experienced how some people act differently at work then  how the behave at home or in social settings.  Sometimes, even new employees once they have passed probation period, can appear to be a quite different person from the personality you met at initial interview! Why is this so?

Understandably there are a variety of complex reasons why someone would react and behave differently at work then at play. Firstly, there are pressures from work commitments, time lines, peers, policies, and company / business culture that will affect the way we behave.

Recent research within the banking industry has shown that there have often been cases of fraud, which have led to a considerable loss of image for banks. Are bank employees by nature less honest people? Or does the business culture in the banking sector favor dishonest behavior? New findings indicate that the business culture in the banking sector implicitly favors dishonest behavior.

Sometimes, it could be the reverse and we can be really nice at work but a nightmare at home!  If you are feeling a little “out of alignment” with your true self… it’s time to pause and reflect..  ask yourself a few questions: like .. Is what you are doing now either at work or at home, beneficial to all concerned? Is it the truth? Does it add-value to your life and the life of others? Is it congruent with the image you want to portray? Is what you are doing meet community and business standards?

A healthy Work Culture!

What to consider before hiring a new recruit.

Recruiting for new staff can be a nightmare.  It is always recommended that when seeking staff, you consider the following first:

1) do you really need this position filled?

2) Has a job analysis been conducted?

3) will it be full time or part time – how many hours per week?

4) what are the roles and responsibilities? are there expected outcomes?

5) budget for salary considerations?

6) what characteristics and personality are you seeking?

7) How and who will supervise this person?
