Redundant? Retrenched? Outplaced?

Whatever the words or terms used to describe this life changing event, it sucks.

Often displaced workers feel like they have been left out in the cold. I’m not sure what the best description of the emotional state is, so let’s explore this further. What is the dictionary definition of “redundant?”.

Redundant the adjective

not or no longer needed or useful; superfluous. “an appropriate use for a redundant church” unnecessary, not required, inessential, unessential, needless,unneeded, uncalled for, dispensable, disposable, expendable, unwanted, useless;

Now for Retrench, the verb

(of an organization or individual) reduce costs or spending in response to economic difficulty.”as a result of the recession the company retrenched”

Economize, cut back, make cutbacks, make savings, make economies, reduce expenditure, be economical, be sparing, be frugal, budget, tighten one’s belt, husband one’s resources, draw in one’s horns, save, scrimp and save, cut corners

However or whatever you name it, there is no sugar coating this event in one’s work life. “Outplaced” sounds nicer, but it is exactly the same thing.

Eather Recruitment provide an individualised service that considers each exiting worker and their unique history and skills-set.

We offer professional outplacement services which assist staff who face redundancy, to move forward with confidence and works to ensure past employees remain strong business ambassadors in the future.

Outplacement job Services

Traditional outplacement services gave job hunters a cubicle, a computer and a telephone, leaving many feeling frustrated, undignified and overwhelmed and leaving the paying organization with the burden of covering the costs of these unnecessary overheads. Our Outplacement Services Program is highly personalized with intensive support for both the organization and its staff. It can be tailored to meet individual requirements, either one interview contact or several.

The difference between winning or losing that job..

“OMG! Did I really say that?” How many times have you heard yourself say this, after a job interview? That play back “cringe” that you experience and that after-shock while you rewind your performance at the interview and worry yourself sick over what you said, how you said it, or didn’t say, or could’ve said .. coulda-woulda-shouda

All I can say is that experience is a damn fine thing, so keep applying for roles and keep attending as many interviews as you can. When you are rewinding and reliving your interview experience, try to remember the great and the good things you did too! Many interviewees suffer the after-shame, and many get better the next time round! Just in case you don’t already know, here are 13 tips on what you must NEVER say or do! Memorize these mandatory rules … here are the DON’Ts

Bag or bad mouth past or current employers, claiming a negative experience – wrong! Stay positive and sound grateful!

Over-talk and bang on and on…just answer the question your were asked succinctly and precisely

Avoid eye contact – make sure you connect with the interviewer/s with good eye contact and SMILE

Turn up ill prepared and without researching the company before the interview

Turn up late or not at all!

Mumble – practice speaking clearly

Dress inappropriately – dress to impress always

Act shy and say “I’m not used to Interviews”. Or “I am nervous”.

Respond with a “NO” …. and say nothing else… always commence and couch responses positively

Behave disinterested and bored

Claim you want the job because of the easy hours and its close proximity to your home address!

Have NO questions prepared to ask the interviewer at the end of the interview

Have a resume filled with fake assertions- present with an authentic resume!

Hope this helps you in your next interview!

The Application Resume – Performance for your career – it’s worth the effort, isn’t it?

It’s easier to be a serial applicant than to be someone who carefully and painfully works out what is the best strategy or option in applying for “that” great job. The choice you make, may enhance your life, and may even leave the world with a legend and a lasting legacy. As my Father would say “use your talents to leave the world in better shape”.

The very process of applying for a job, whether informal or formal could be the fight not just for your career, but for your life. We are intrinsically defined by the jobs we perform. It takes up an enormous part of our existence and sadly it often defines us. Our choices also affect our family, friends and most importantly our mental health.

Job applications are no different than planning anything significant in your life. Yah.. you can get away with going from job to aimless job, and saving what meager funds and faith you can in the world. Nothing wrong with that – if that’s what you want. I wanted more. I wanted my job to enable be to be part of my community in a meaningful way. I wanted to integrate and engage with people who needed help and support. I wanted a job that made me feel good. I was not interested (nor was I good at it) in repeat, rinse, wash, dry and repeat. I liked structure, but hated the routine. I liked rules, but also liked to see and work in “grey” areas. I was a bit complicated! But I knew who I was, what I was good at and had some ideas of the type of work that would warm my soul. NO, I didn’t always know.. I made tons of mistakes, applying for dumb jobs and spent too many hours that I lost forever from my short life. Yes, those jobs shaped me. But I often wonder what benefits the world lost and I lost wasting my time in stupid jobs.

So what is your overall goal? What do you want from life and most importantly, what job do think will get the best out of you!

All I’m saying is think about it before you embark on the application and towards your career journey. Think hard of the impact, the repercussions of deciding to follow the money and not the magic!
