THE RESUME LINE UP

It’s essential to have a series of resumes, all individually built for a specific purpose.

These boats are built and ready for general purpose, ready for a certain type of sea travel. I am sure you could list the types of fishing that could be perform with them, and the types of journeys these boats are good for. They are not good for long months out to sea, they are not good for speed and they are specifically crafted for a certain type of travel. Agreed?

Individualise each resume to suit the job advert.

Just like these boats, if you have several roles you could perform, then you will need several types of resumes to best accommodate the roles. There is no point applying for a job with a resume that is more suited to another role. A role quite different and one that is not advertised.

As recruiters, we often receive the same cookie-cutter styled resumes and that would be OK if only these resumes were written with the utmost care and with the job advertisement and job requirements in mind. We often throw our hands in the air when a resume arrives from a very qualified and experienced horticulturalist who applies for a role within our accounts and back office. Are we supposed to read between the lines? or perhaps assume way too much?

We read in frustration for any links to the role we have advertised and see nothing. This makes for a confused start as nothing in the resume tells us that this candidate has transferable skills, and there are no indications that they would even forfeit the outdoors for indoor work. We are not mind readers, and we are not psychic.

Readers of your resume need to have things spelled out to them, literally! They need to see the possibilities, the foundation skills set that would entice them to at least interview the candidate. They need to read fit for purpose, so make the transition easier for them, and spell it out!

Writing a winning resume is a skill, and an art.

Producing a winning resume that stands-out is a specialised skill, and also an art. You will need to have a resume that works for you. It has to be tailored and specific for the position you seek. Your personality, abilities and talents need to be clearly noticeable. You need to be “different” from all the other cookie cutter style resumes.

If you rarely receive a reply to your job applications, there is a strong message and lesson here. Clearly, your resume is not working for you.

Resumes are the most crucial factor in many job applications, they are the only way a prospective employer obtains an impression of you, your work history and suitability for the role/culture.

What is your resume saying about you? Is it error-free? is it written for reading? is it too long? too short? lacks relevant information? looks like every other resume and does not have your individual stamp? Is in such a small or large font that it is illegible? I could go on and on and on here, you get the drift.

There is help available if you think your resume is sick, and by this I mean it is in poor health and unable to get you over the line to an interview, then you will need to seek specialist advice.

Often having an Objective third party read, review and assess the document, reading and interpreting it from the “employers” perspective. Yes, we are all sentimental about our resumes because we know how long and lovingly we entered our valuable work history and details. Great, now get over yourself, do you want “that’ job or more rejection?

Finally, seek an expert by phoning 0404056278 and Ivana Agapiou our resume writer will talk with you about a personalized resume. It will be devised so that it will launch you to your next interview and perhaps your dream job!

Your resume is one of the main ways employers have of making a judgement of your ability to perform a role.

Your document requires structure and a pathway of understanding for your reader. It should not be a difficult maze of distracting information to navigate.

It should reflect who you are, what you have done and what you could offer a new employer; it should not be an example of how much you don’t care about the impression you’re making.

Seriously, the resume that is highlighted below was an actual, live application (yes all the names and contact details have been changed to protect the innocent)

The font size and the layout is exactly as it presented and Dear Ruby (not her real name) was applying for a role as an office assistant. We have left all the errors intact so that you can judge for yourself.

This IS a BAD resume and it will not be able to allow Ruby to get to an interview.

How many errors can you find?

What judgement did you make of Ruby as a potential employee?

Would you refer her to a position within your business?

What advice would you give Ruby on improving her resume as well as he approach to work outside of Hospitality industry eg for Office work?

check this real example (names changed ) READ ON!

Many organisations have critically analysed the role/s and formulated the necessities to perform the roles. Not only is there a LIST of what is required, they also have graded the capabilities in priority groups. These levels reflect a progressive increase in complexity and skill that may be required from the candidate. Job applications for many public sector jobs now require you to address "capability statements" in your application.

Don’t ignore the Capability statements, levels and frameworks.

Tread slowly and carefully, as responding to these can be a minefield.

Capability (or ability) frameworks describe the skills and behaviors that employers want their people to demonstrate if they are doing high quality work. These frameworks provide an over-arching list of the skills required in particular work settings or contexts. They are broad descriptions, against which specific skills can be mapped. Typically they cover a range of job roles andor work contexts.

Many organisations have critically analysed the role/s and formulated the necessities to perform the roles. Not only is there a LIST of what is required, they also have graded the capabilities in priority groups. These levels reflect a progressive increase in complexity and skill that may be required from the candidate. Job applications for many public sector jobs now require you to address “capability statements” in your application. These were developed using a capability framework and have replaced the old “selection criteria“. NO application will be considered seriously unless your application incorporates the capabilities.

So, you find “that” great job and you eagerly apply. You notice that they only have a few application requirements, that is, a resume and responses to a few “target questions“.

Often the target questions seem quite simplistic, innocuous even, just like the following examples:

We are all faced with challenging deadlines. Could you describe a scenario where you had competing deadlines. How did you manage your workload? What was the end outcome? OR

Please describe a situation where you had a complex issue that had to be resolved. What was the issue? What factors did you have to consider in resolving it? What was the outcome?

Then you notice other documents, like the position description; a table with capability framework and capability statements. All these documents need to be thoroughly analysed prior to your application. DON’T assume that they are just background chatter! The “trick” is to incorporate the capabilities into target question responses .YEEK – not as easy as it sounds!

This is my advice for tackling target questions

read and analyse all documents

visit the public sector website for handy hints

note the “weightings” on specific capabilities – some are more important than others

create responses that reflect the capabilities, in fact adapt and use some the wording used to describe the capabilities for example in response to a target question on the capability, challenging deadlines

“I self managed the work load by formulating a clear and simple Business plan that followed measurable and achievable goals and included priorities and deadlines. I arranged the project into bite sized projects and whilst investigating and researching the project I proactively encouraged “excellence in trade operators” to gain their T A E qualification. This ensured that I had a workforce plan with capable resources. Once I set the operational targets, I consulted and evaluated the progress with the customer demographic, along with the team and executives. I solicited feedback, gathered more ideas and resolved potential problems”. The outcomes were, job ready staff, new products delivered on time; increase in student numbers .

NOTE the following: The items in “bold” all reflect the abilities required to handle challenges BASED on the capability statements that are clearly outlined in the application documents . Also note that it was all set in the past and the story had the following formula or structure

a scenario or situation 2. what you did in the scenario 3. the results or outcomes

Many organisations, especially those that all on-line applications, also use software programs that check for KEY words and phrases as they pertain to the capability statements and grade your application accordingly!!!

Computers now conduct searches for the vital key words in a resume and the targeted responses to find the more qualified candidates in a few key strokes. They don’t care how long or detailed your resume is (now) because they let the search engine do the identification based on what THEY ARE LOOKING FOR and believe that the software will identify the more qualified candidates to interview.

So start the process of updating and obtaining a rewrite of your resume TODAY with the best resume writer in the marketplace so you, as the job seeker, can be ready to actively (or passively) search for that next exciting career job!

The Waiting

We are often asked how long it would take a company to get back to you after you have applied for a job. There is no right answer. There is best practice that most companies try to follow.

Many companies have a structured recruitment phase. This includes:

composing the advert

Listing the job on net /media

scouring through resumes

screening applications (usually 2 weeks after advert goes live) scanning resumes

calling successful candidates to an interview

reference checks

selection

Informing all the unsuccessful candidates

Often the bigger the company, the longer they take to recruit. However, small business owners who are time poor, may also take a long time to contact you.

Sadly, all too often, many don’t call; write or email you back at all. This wait period is, and can be, highly stressful. To ease your anxiety, make a list of all the jobs you applied for. On this list, include the Company name; the job outline; the date you applied (or their closing date for applications) and the reasons why you applied. That way, if /when you get THE CALL, you will be prepared. This is important to do especially if you have applied for several jobs at once. There is nothing more unprofessional than responding to that all important call with “who are ya?” or even worse, “what job did I apply for?”

When you do get the call, and are scheduled for an interview, make sure you are fully prepared. If you haven’t done it already, research the company and the role further.

Lastly, you got the call! and now all you have to do is perform your very best at interview and then throw it all to chance! Hopefully, you will be called and congratulated on getting the job. If not, soldier on, as sometimes its not you.. its just chance…
